    Main Purpose of the Job:

    The Veterinary Technologist is responsible for conducting laboratory diagnostic tests, managing diagnostic data, and supporting veterinary research efforts. This position ensures accurate, timely, and efficient delivery of laboratory services to support the province’s animal health systems and agricultural development goals.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Diagnostic Testing and Laboratory Services:

      • Receive, register, collect, and process specimens for diagnostic testing

      • Perform and interpret a range of laboratory diagnostic tests using approved methods and techniques

      • Review and verify test results to ensure quality and accuracy

    • Data Management and Reporting:

      • Populate diagnostic data in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)

      • Generate and maintain veterinary statistics for national and international reporting

      • Compile and submit monthly and annual statistical reports as required

    • Technical Support and Quality Assurance:

      • Participate in the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

      • Ensure compliance with quality management systems

      • Stay informed about new technologies and developments in veterinary diagnostics

    • Equipment and Inventory Management:

      • Oversee the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment

      • Manage stock control for the relevant diagnostic section

      • Ensure adherence to national laboratory compliance and safety standards

    • Supervision and Administrative Duties:

      • Supervise technical personnel within the section

      • Assist in managing the section’s budget and administrative responsibilities

      • Provide input into operational planning and performance reporting

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    Minimum Education:

    • National Diploma in Veterinary Technology

    Professional Registration:

    • Must be registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC)

    Experience:

    • 1 to 2 years of post-qualification experience

    Other Requirements:

    • Valid driver’s license

    Skills and Knowledge:

    • Proficiency in conducting veterinary diagnostic tests

    • Strong understanding of laboratory quality control procedures

    • Experience with data management systems such as LIMS

    • Knowledge of laboratory equipment operation, maintenance, and calibration

    • Familiarity with relevant national veterinary and laboratory compliance standards

    • Ability to interpret and report diagnostic data

    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy

    • Good written and verbal communication skills

    • Competency in supervising technical personnel
