Main Purpose of the Job:
The Animal Health Technician will support the Department’s mandate to control and prevent animal diseases, enhance livestock productivity, and ensure community education on animal health practices. The role involves implementing disease control programs, sample collection, assisting veterinarians, and providing critical extension services in the field.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Disease Control and Field Services:

Implement control measures for animal diseases such as Rabies, Brucellosis, and Anthrax
-
Administer vaccinations and monitor the spread of notifiable animal diseases
-
Collect and dispatch biological specimens for laboratory testing
-
Conduct routine inspections of livestock for health assessment and disease detection
-
Participate in disease eradication campaigns and census data collection
2. Veterinary Support and Law Enforcement:

Assist State Veterinarians with animal disease investigations, post mortems, and disease surveys

Conduct inspections of animal products, processing facilities, and vaccine distribution points
-
Support the enforcement of veterinary legislation at auctions, border posts, and roadblocks
-
Ensure compliance with national and provincial animal health standards
3. Extension Services and Community Engagement:

Liaise with farmers, communities, and organized agriculture to identify animal health needs
-
Present educational sessions at farmers’ days, community outreach programs, and training events
-
Promote best practices in animal care, productivity, and disease prevention
4. Administrative Functions:

Populate and manage animal health databases and disease control registers
-
Compile and submit monthly and quarterly operational reports
-
Provide input toward the operational planning of the Animal Health Unit
Qualifications and Requirements:
Minimum Education:
-
National Diploma in Animal Health
Professional Registration:
-
Must be registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as an Animal Health Technician
Experience:
-
1 to 2 years of post-qualification experience
Other Requirements:
-
Valid Code 08 (EB) driver’s license
-
Willingness to travel and work in rural and remote areas
Skills and Competencies:

Strong knowledge of animal disease control strategies

Fieldwork experience in livestock environments

Good communication and interpersonal skills
-
Ability to educate and engage communities and farmers
-
Competence in sample handling and diagnostic data management
-
Understanding of relevant veterinary laws and compliance procedures

Proficiency in administrative reporting and data entry
