Job Purpose
The Temporary Afrikaans FAL Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality teaching and learning in Afrikaans First Additional Language (FET Phase) in accordance with the Curro curriculum and Independent Examinations Board (IEB) standards. The role aims to develop learners’ academic achievement, language proficiency, critical thinking, and positive attitudes through effective classroom instruction, assessment, learner support, and participation in school activities.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Plan and deliver engaging Afrikaans FAL lessons aligned with the Curro and IEB curriculum.
- Use modern teaching strategies, educational technology, and learner-centred methodologies.
- Prepare lesson plans, workbooks, and teaching resources.
- Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning needs.
- Promote learner participation and academic excellence.
Curriculum Planning
- Develop, implement, monitor, and adjust term plans.
- Align teaching schedules with assessments, examinations, and school activities.
- Prepare differentiated learning materials to support learners with learning barriers.
- Ensure curriculum coverage within prescribed timeframes.
Assessment and Academic Progress
- Design and administer baseline assessments to determine learners’ academic levels.
- Conduct formal and informal assessments in accordance with school policies.
- Assess, moderate, record, and report learner performance.
- Analyse assessment results and recommend:
- Appropriate subject choices.
- Teaching interventions.
- Remedial and catch-up programmes.
- Monitor learner progress and implement improvement strategies.
Classroom Management
- Create a positive, safe, and disciplined learning environment.
- Organise and maintain an effective classroom layout.
- Establish and enforce classroom rules and behavioural expectations.
- Maintain learner attendance and academic records.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding learner progress and behaviour.
Learner Support
- Provide individual tutoring and academic support where required.
- Conduct extra lessons to improve learner performance.
- Support learners experiencing academic or learning challenges.
- Encourage learner confidence, motivation, and personal development.
Extramural Activities
- Plan, organise, and supervise extracurricular activities.
- Coordinate educational outings and school events where required.
- Participate in school functions and departmental activities.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Prepare assessment schedules and homework programmes.
- Maintain accurate learner records and reports.
- Complete required academic and administrative documentation.
- Ensure compliance with Curro and IEB policies and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree and/or
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) specialising in the FET Phase.
- Honours degree in Education (relevant subject) is advantageous.
Experience
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience teaching in the FET Phase.
Registration
- Registered with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).
- Clear criminal record.
