Job Description
Transnet SOC Ltd is inviting suitably qualified and experienced contractors to provide roof and gutter cleaning and maintenance services at the Transnet Engineering Bloemfontein facility.
The appointed contractor will be responsible for inspecting, cleaning and maintaining roof structures, gutters, water collectors, downpipes, channels and drainage systems across designated areas of the facility.
The work is aimed at preventing water ingress, corrosion, blockages and drainage-related problems while maintaining the structural condition and operational safety of the facility. The contractor will also be required to carry out sealing and minor maintenance activities where specified and ensure that all work is completed safely and to the required quality standards.
Responsibilities
The successful contractor will be responsible for:
- Inspecting roof sheets, ridges and flashings for damage, rust, leaks and loose fasteners.
- Removing dirt, leaves, debris and other accumulated material from roof surfaces.
- Cleaning and inspecting gutters and pipe gutters.
- Removing blockages from gutters and drainage systems.
- Inspecting gutters and associated structures for corrosion and deterioration.
- Applying industrial sealants at specified column interfaces and structural joints.
- Maintaining water collectors and downpipes.
- Clearing debris from water collectors and drainage points.
- Sealing specified joints, including 300mm × 300mm joints where required.
- Flushing gutters, downpipes and drainage systems.
- Unclogging channels and drains using suitable equipment.
- Using fire hoses and hydraulic water-blasting equipment where required to restore effective water flow.
- Sealing galvanized ridge flashing where specified.
- Identifying potential leaks, damaged areas and maintenance requirements.
- Recording completed work and providing photographic evidence where required.
- Maintaining a clean and safe working environment throughout the project.
- Coordinating work across production areas, offices, warehouses and other designated facilities.
- Minimising disruption to Transnet operations.
- Complying with all applicable Transnet health, safety, quality and environmental requirements.
Requirements
Contractor Requirements
- Minimum CIDB Grade 2GB or higher, as specified in the tender documentation.
- Proven experience in roofing maintenance and building maintenance works.
- Experience in roof and gutter cleaning.
- Experience in gutter sealing and drainage maintenance.
- Experience working at heights.
- Ability to undertake work across multiple areas of an operational industrial facility.
- Suitable equipment, tools and resources to complete the required work.
Health and Safety Requirements
- Compliance with Transnet’s health and safety requirements.
- Valid credentials and competency for working at heights.
- Appropriate working-at-height safety procedures.
- Employees must use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including:
- Steel-toed safety shoes
- High-visibility vests
- Hard hats
- Personnel must comply with site access and safety screening requirements, including breathalyser testing where applicable.
- Comprehensive risk assessments must be prepared and submitted.
- Appropriate safety training and inspection procedures must be maintained.
- Contractors must provide relevant health and safety documentation and records.
Quality and Technical Requirements
- All materials used must be SANS-approved, A-grade and of first-class quality.
- Workmanship will be subject to Transnet quality assurance inspections.
- Contractors must provide a detailed project programme/Gantt chart.
- Suitable equipment must be available for cleaning gutters, channels and drainage systems.
- Hydraulic water-blasting equipment must be used appropriately to clear stubborn blockages.
- Contractors must document completed interventions and provide photographic records where required.
Financial and Compliance Requirements
- Proof of adequate insurance coverage, including applicable contract works and public liability insurance.
- Appropriate motor vehicle third-party and employee injury coverage.
- Valid Central Supplier Database (CSD) registration.
- Tax compliance requirements must be met.
- Submission of required financial statements and supporting documentation.
- Valid B-BBEE certification or sworn affidavit, where applicable.
- Compliance with all tender submission requirements.
- Subcontracting arrangements must comply with Transnet’s requirements and obtain prior approval where required.
