Responsibilities:
The Deputy Director: Communication will be responsible for the overall strategic communication function of the Department. This includes managing both internal and external communications, leading the Communication Sub-Directorate, and ensuring that all departmental messages are consistent with the Provincial Communication Strategy. The successful candidate will be required to:

Manage the Communication Sub-Directorate, including planning, coordination, execution, and reporting on communication activities

Develop and implement departmental communication guidelines to ensure standardization across various platforms and initiatives
-
Oversee and coordinate high-profile public events, such as Imbizo outreach programmes, national commemorative days, and outside broadcasts
-
Provide expert advice and strategic guidance to senior management on communication matters
-
Engage in stakeholder collaboration and public participation processes to enhance the visibility and reputation of the department
-
Develop and execute comprehensive communication plans and campaigns that support both departmental and provincial objectives
-
Facilitate internal communication initiatives to foster organizational cohesion and ensure that employees are informed about important departmental developments

Lead and manage media liaison, risk and reputation management, and the integration of public health data into communication efforts
-
Align all departmental messaging and branding to ensure consistency across communication channels
-
Monitor, evaluate, and report on the impact of communication strategies and campaigns
-
Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and communication best practices within the public sector
-
Effectively manage human resources in the unit, including task delegation, performance management, mentoring, and capacity development of staff
Qualifications:
-
A minimum of an NQF Level 7 qualification in Communication, Media Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, or Marketing Studies (or an equivalent qualification)

At least 3 to 5 years’ experience at the level of Assistant Director or equivalent within the communication, media, or public relations fields
-
Demonstrated public service experience in communication that includes managing public relations, internal and external campaigns, media relations, and risk management
-
Proven skills in strategic communication planning, stakeholder engagement, and organizational communications
-
Strong writing and communication abilities, with the capability to craft effective messaging for different audiences
-
Solid background in event management and public participation initiatives
-
People management skills, including the ability to lead a team, conduct performance reviews, and foster a supportive working environment
-
A valid Code B or EB driver’s license
