Job Overview
The University of the Free State is seeking a Herbicide Operator to support grounds maintenance and the safe application of herbicides across the campus.
The successful candidate will operate relevant equipment, maintain accurate herbicide registers, follow environmental and Occupational Health and Safety procedures, and ensure that grounds and work areas are maintained according to established standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate herbicide application and other relevant equipment.
- Sign equipment and herbicides in and out of the store daily.
- Maintain the herbicide register accurately.
- Complete equipment inspection reports and submit them for approval.
- Clean and maintain equipment before returning it to the store.
- Report damaged, lost or ineffective equipment.
- Follow daily work schedules and Environmental Unit SOPs.
- Maintain campus grounds and terrain according to required standards.
- Maintain checklists and ensure programme sign-offs.
- Report operational and safety concerns to the line manager.
- Attend OHS toolbox talks and scheduled meetings.
- Keep workspaces, storage areas and service quarters clean and tidy.
- Follow safe working procedures when handling equipment and products.
- Wear the required PPE, including uniforms, safety shoes and other job-specific protective clothing.
- Perform other general duties as instructed by management.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 10 on NQF Level 2 (proof must be attached).
- Experience in grounds maintenance, herbicide application or related duties.
Recommended Requirements
- Grade 12 or National Vocational Certificate on NQF Level 4.
- At least 1 year’s relevant experience.
- Experience operating gardening equipment.
- Knowledge of herbicide and pesticide application.
