Job Purpose
To supervise and assess Foundation Phase student teachers during school-based teaching practice by conducting classroom observations, providing professional mentorship, evaluating teaching performance, and submitting assessment reports in accordance with institutional requirements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Supervision of Teaching Practice
- Conduct scheduled in-person school visits.
- Observe student teachers during classroom teaching.
- Evaluate:
- Lesson planning
- Classroom presentation and delivery
- Classroom management
- Reflective teaching practices
- Assess teaching effectiveness against required standards.
- Provide constructive feedback following classroom observations.
2. Mentorship and Student Support
- Guide and mentor student teachers throughout their teaching practice.
- Assist students in reflecting on their teaching performance.
- Identify strengths and areas requiring improvement.
- Support students in achieving teaching and learning objectives.
- Recommend teaching strategies and alternative approaches to improve performance.
- Encourage professional growth and development.
3. Assessment and Reporting
- Complete formal observation reports.
- Assess student performance using institutional rubrics.
- Submit accurate reports within required deadlines.
- Participate in assessment and marking processes when required.
- Maintain accurate documentation of student evaluations.
4. Collaboration and Communication
- Maintain regular communication with:
- Student teachers
- Mentor teachers
- School representatives
- Institutional coordinators
- Attend:
- Training sessions
- Briefing meetings
- Feedback sessions
- Maintain professional ethics and confidentiality at all times.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Degree in:
- Foundation Phase, or
- Intermediate Phase
- Honours Degree in Education.
Advantageous
- Postgraduate qualification in Education.
Professional Experience
Essential
- Minimum 5 years’ teaching experience in the relevant phase.
Preferred
- Experience mentoring or supervising student teachers.
- Experience in teacher development and professional support.
Knowledge Requirements
- Knowledge of the CAPS curriculum.
- Understanding of current teaching methodologies.
- Knowledge of inclusive education practices.
- Understanding of classroom diversity and differentiated learning.
- Knowledge of South African higher education systems.
- Understanding of teaching and learning theories.
