Job Overview
The Medical Specialist in Psychiatry will provide specialized mental health services, while also contributing to leadership, research, and academic development within the Free State Psychiatric Complex.
This role combines clinical care, strategic management, and academic responsibilities, making it suitable for experienced psychiatrists who want to impact both patient care and medical education.
Job Description
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality psychiatric care to patients, while also playing a leadership role in the management of mental health services.
The role includes involvement in teaching medical students, supervising research, and contributing to the development of mental health programs across the province. You will also collaborate with academic institutions such as the University of the Free State.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Mental Health Services
Provide compassionate, high-quality psychiatric care
Diagnose and treat mental health conditions
Support mental health care users within the facility
Leadership & Management
Participate in strategic and operational management of mental health services
Help develop and implement outreach programs across the province
Strengthen healthcare systems and service delivery
Teaching & Academic Development
Teach and train undergraduate and postgraduate students
Supervise research and academic projects
Contribute to academic programs in Psychiatry
Research & Knowledge Management
Conduct and support research initiatives
Improve information and knowledge management systems
Enhance research capacity within the institution
Workforce Development
Build and support a strong, responsive healthcare team
Contribute to staff development and leadership
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications & Registration
MBChB degree
Postgraduate qualification in Psychiatry
Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry
Valid HPCSA registration for 2026/2027
Experience
Grade 1: No experience required
Grade 2: Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Medical Specialist
Grade 3: Minimum 10 years’ experience as a Medical Specialist
Other Requirements
Valid driver’s license
Knowledge & Skills
Evidence of research capability
Experience in lecturing or teaching students
Strong leadership and management skills
Ability to work in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment
Good communication and interpersonal skills
