Job Description
This is a specialist nursing management role in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing. You will oversee critical care nursing services, ensuring the highest level of care for critically ill patients requiring intensive monitoring and life support.
The role combines ICU clinical leadership, staff supervision, training, and operational management.
Key Responsibilities
ICU Clinical Coordination
- Oversee intensive care nursing services
- Ensure high-quality care for critically ill patients
- Maintain ICU clinical standards and protocols
Leadership & Supervision
- Manage ICU nursing staff
- Supervise and support junior nurses
- Ensure proper allocation of staff and resources
Resource Management
- Manage ICU equipment and critical care resources
- Ensure availability and proper use of life-support systems
- Optimise unit efficiency and patient flow
Training & Development
- Train and mentor ICU nursing staff
- Participate in clinical teaching and research
- Promote continuous professional development
Compliance & Governance
Ensure adherence to:
- Nursing Act
- Health Act
- Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Patient Rights Charter
- Batho Pele Principles
- Public service HR and financial policies
Operational Management
- Manage daily ICU operations
- Ensure compliance with nursing standards and policies
- Support multidisciplinary ICU team functioning
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Senior Certificate)
- Nursing diploma/degree (R425 qualification or equivalent)
- Post-basic qualification (1-year) in:
- Intensive Nursing Science (ICU nursing)
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse
- Current SANC registration (2026/2027)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 9 years nursing experience after registration
- At least 5 years ICU / intensive care nursing experience after post-basic qualification
- Must be willing to work shifts
