The University of the Free State (UFS) is offering an exciting internship opportunity for aspiring professionals in the field of Agronomy, Plant Pathology, or Microbiology. This one-year contract position as an Intern: Technician and Extension Officer provides an excellent platform for recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in agricultural research and extension services. The internship is based at the Bloemfontein Campus, Free State, South Africa.
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be expected to actively contribute to various technical and research-related tasks, including:
- Planting, maintaining, and evaluating summer grain crop trials in both field and greenhouse settings.
- Conducting disease surveillance and monitoring of summer grain crops across production regions.
- Isolating and purifying fungal pathogens from different agricultural crops.
- Performing morphological and molecular characterization of fungal pathogens.
- Assisting in the maintenance and development of a plant disease culture collection.
- Compiling technical reports and conducting preliminary data analyses.
- Managing project facilities, consumables, and equipment to ensure efficient resource utilization.
- Communicating research findings through reports, scientific publications, and presentations.
- Engaging with industry stakeholders, researchers, and farmers to promote plant disease management awareness.
- Participating in the organization and execution of scientific events, farmer information days, and open days.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A BSc (Hons) or BSc Agric (NQF Level 8) in Agronomy, Plant Pathology, or Microbiology.
- Experience in technical aspects of plant pathology, field research, or diagnostics.
- A valid South African Code B/EB driver’s license or an internationally accepted equivalent.
- Registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) (or willingness to register if not yet a member).
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
Candidates with additional qualifications and skills may have a competitive advantage, including:
- A MSc degree in Agronomy, Plant Pathology, or Microbiology.
- Additional training or certification in epidemiology, molecular diagnostics, biotechnology, or plant disease management.
- Proficiency in R programming and statistical data analysis.
- Strong scientific writing and public speaking skills.
- Experience in field and greenhouse trial management.
- Knowledge of plant disease diagnostics using morphological and molecular techniques.
- Technical expertise in culture collection management and report writing.
- Experience in event planning and coordination.
Internship Selection Criteria
The internship is designed for individuals who are new to the workforce. The selection criteria include:
- The applicant must not be currently enrolled in another internship or learnership program.
- The applicant must not have previous formal work experience.
- The selected candidate must sign a learnership/internship agreement with UFS.
- The applicant must be available for the full 12-month internship period.
