The University of the Free State (UFS) is offering an exciting internship opportunity for aspiring social workers. The institution is seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to fill the role of Intern: Social Worker on a one-year contract basis at its Qwaqwa Campus in the Free State.

Key Responsibilities of the Intern Social Worker
1. Provision of Social Work Interventions to Students
The intern will be responsible for offering professional counselling, psycho-education, support, and referral services to students dealing with various psycho-social challenges. The intervention strategies will be based on evidence-based social work practices. The intern will provide support in the following areas:
- Substance abuse
- Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
- Bereavement and grief
- Academic exclusions and related distress
- Unplanned pregnancies
- Traumatic experiences
- Family-related matters
- Food insecurity
2. Group Interventions
The intern will be actively involved in various student engagement initiatives such as:
- Participating in the UFS Open Day and Orientation Programme, where they will assist in creating awareness and promoting student well-being.
- Facilitating sessions for student leadership and peer mentors, equipping them with skills to offer support to their peers.
- Running support groups for students facing common challenges.
- Advocating for social justice issues such as diversity, human rights, social equity, and access to essential resources.
3. Administrative Duties
The role also involves several administrative responsibilities to ensure efficient service delivery, including:
- Managing diaries and scheduling appointments.
- Maintaining professional statistics and keeping accurate records.
- Documenting process notes, referral letters, reports, and email communications.
- Handling telephonic and general inquiries from students and stakeholders.
4. Additional Responsibilities
In addition to the above duties, the intern will be expected to:
- Assist with the No Student Hungry Food Distribution Programme and support the Vegetable Garden initiative, which aims to address food insecurity on campus.
- Complete any additional tasks assigned by the Director of Student Affairs.
- Liaise with relevant stakeholders and contribute towards the overarching goals of Student Counselling and Development (SCD) and UFS Vision 130.
Requirements for the Position
To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
Essential Qualifications and Criteria
- A bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) or an equivalent qualification at NQF Level 8.
- Active registration as a Social Worker with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) (proof of registration must be attached).
- Must reside within a commutable distance from the UFS Qwaqwa Campus.
Recommended Skills and Experience
Although not mandatory, the following attributes will be an added advantage:
- Experience working with students in a Higher Education environment (e.g., involvement in student leadership, peer mentorship programs, or student associations).
- Ability to adhere to ethical guidelines and UFS policies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Effective time management skills and the ability to work under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with students and colleagues.
- Fluency in Sesotho and/or Zulu.
Eligibility for Internship
The selection of candidates will be subject to the following internship eligibility requirements:
- The applicant must not be currently participating in another internship or learnership program.
- The applicant must not have prior formal work experience.
- The successful candidate will be required to sign an internship agreement with UFS.
- The applicant must be available for a full year to complete the internship.
