Job Description
This role is a specialised professional nursing position in primary healthcare, focused on delivering community-based clinical services, prevention, treatment, and health education.
You will work in clinics and communities, providing both curative and preventative healthcare, while also coordinating patient care between clinics, hospitals, and community health services.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care (Primary Healthcare)
- Provide comprehensive community health services
- Offer curative and preventative care
- Treat minor ailments and initiate treatment plans
- Conduct patient consultations and follow-ups
- Evaluate patient conditions and adjust care plans
Patient Referral & Coordination
- Refer patients to:
- Hospitals
- Doctors
- Specialists
- Rehabilitation services
- Oral health services
- Coordinate care between hospital and community services
Health Education & Community Work
- Educate patients individually and in groups
- Promote health awareness in communities
- Participate in community meetings and committees
- Identify community health needs
Administration & Clinical Management
- Manage clinic operations in collaboration with Clinical Manager
- Maintain patient health records and data systems
- Ensure proper control of:
- Medication
- Medical stock
- Equipment and supplies
- Order stationery and medical consumables
Medication & Resource Control
- Manage medication according to Essential Drug List (EDL)
- Ensure safe storage of stock and equipment
- Oversee pharmaceutical processes in absence of pharmacy staff
Leadership & Training
- Participate in clinical teaching and staff training
- Assess and support nursing staff development
- Identify training needs and implement programmes
- Mentor junior nursing personnel
Research & Quality Improvement
- Participate in healthcare research
- Align research with community health needs
- Contribute to continuous improvement of nursing care
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Nursing diploma/degree (R425 qualification)
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council (valid 2026/2027)
- Post-basic qualification in Primary Health Care (1-year minimum, SANC accredited)
Experience Required
- Grade 1: Minimum 4 years post-registration nursing experience
- Grade 2: Minimum 14 years post-registration nursing experience
