Job Description
This role is a specialised mental health nursing position focused on providing advanced psychiatric care to patients in a hospital setting.
You will work with patients who have mental health conditions, ensuring safe, ethical, and effective treatment within a structured psychiatric environment.
Key Responsibilities
Psychiatric Nursing Care
- Provide advanced nursing care to psychiatric patients
- Deliver holistic, patient-centred mental health treatment
- Ensure safe and cost-effective care delivery
Clinical Leadership (Shift Work)
- Act as shift leader when required
- Supervise nursing staff in the unit
- Guide implementation of nursing care plans
Quality & Standards
- Implement nursing standards and quality indicators
- Ensure compliance with psychiatric care protocols
- Maintain high standards of clinical practice
Legal & Ethical Compliance
- Apply the Mental Health Care Act correctly
- Ensure compliance with:
- Nursing legislation
- Ethical healthcare practices
- Protect patient rights and confidentiality
Teamwork & Coordination
- Maintain strong relationships with healthcare teams
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary professionals
- Support effective communication in the unit
Resource Management
- Use hospital resources efficiently
- Manage staff, equipment, and supplies responsibly
- Ensure proper allocation of physical and human resources
Minimum Requirements
- Diploma/Degree in Nursing (R425 qualification or equivalent)
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse
- Minimum 4 years nursing experience after registration in General Nursing & Midwifery
- 1-year post-basic qualification in:
- Advanced Psychiatry OR
- Child Psychiatry
