Job Description
The Senior Public Prosecutor is a senior legal professional responsible for managing prosecution teams, guiding investigations, and representing the State in criminal proceedings.
The role involves supervising prosecutors, including trainee prosecutors, ensuring effective case preparation, and leading prosecution strategies in complex criminal matters.
The position requires strong leadership, legal expertise, and the ability to work independently while maintaining high professional and ethical standards.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Supervision
- Manage and supervise prosecutors and trainee prosecutors
- Allocate work and monitor performance
- Train and mentor junior prosecutors
- Guide prosecutors in case preparation and trial conduct
Court Representation and Prosecution
- Represent the State in criminal courts
- Conduct prosecutions in complex and serious cases
- Lead and cross-examine witnesses
- Present arguments on conviction and sentencing
Case Management and Legal Work
- Draft charge sheets and complex court documents
- Provide legal instructions to investigators
- Decide on institution and conduct of criminal proceedings
- Handle representations and complaints
Strategic and Operational Support
- Implement directives from senior prosecution leadership
- Contribute to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) strategic goals
- Ensure operational targets are met
- Promote collaboration within the criminal justice system
Administration and Compliance
- Perform administrative duties related to prosecution work
- Ensure adherence to NPA policies and code of conduct
- Maintain accountability and professionalism
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- LLB degree (Bachelor of Laws)
- OR appropriate legal qualification for serving prosecutors seeking promotion
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years post-qualification legal experience
- At least 5 years legal practice experience (advantageous)
