Job Description
The Director: Legal Services will provide strategic legal leadership and advisory support to the entire Department and the Office of the MEC. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing legal risks, litigation, legal drafting, legislative review, legal compliance, and the provision of legal advisory services.
The role requires a senior legal professional with extensive knowledge of South African public sector law and experience in managing legal services at a middle or senior management level.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal guidance and support to the Department.
- Advise the MEC, senior management, and staff on legal matters.
- Identify, manage, and mitigate legal risks affecting the Department.
- Manage litigation matters, including civil and labour-related cases.
- Oversee the effective management of litigation.
- Manage the drafting of legal opinions, contracts, and other legal documents.
- Provide legal advisory support services.
- Coordinate with other government departments on legal matters affecting the Department.
- Coordinate legislative review and law reform programmes.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legal and administrative requirements.
- Handle and manage litigation matters.
- Ensure compliance with national, international, and continental legal instruments.
- Advise on the drafting, implementation, and monitoring of Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Represent the Department at relevant forums, including:
- Civil litigation matters
- Labour matters
- Bargaining Councils
- CCMA
- Labour Court
- Participate in the development of:
- Five-year Strategic Plans
- Annual Performance Plans (APP)
- Directorate Operational Plans
- Monitor implementation and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
- Manage Directorate resources, including:
- Budget
- Training
- Mentoring and development
- Performance management
- Work allocation
Requirements
- An appropriate NQF Level 7 qualification in Law, recognised by SAQA.
- Must be admitted as an Attorney or Advocate.
- At least 5 years’ experience at middle or senior managerial level in a legal environment.
- Valid Code B driver’s licence.
- Compulsory Nyukela SMS Pre-Entry Certificate prior to appointment.
