     Job Overview

    The Assistant Manager: Nursing (Psychiatry) is responsible for leading, supervising, and coordinating psychiatric nursing services within the facility. This role ensures high-quality patient care, adherence to nursing standards, and the professional development of staff.

    This position combines clinical expertise, management skills, and administrative responsibilities to support efficient operations and optimal nursing care delivery in a psychiatric setting.

     Job Description

    The role involves overseeing nursing staff, managing resources, coordinating patient care, and ensuring compliance with professional, legal, and ethical standards. The Assistant Manager acts as a support to the Nursing Manager and may perform managerial duties as delegated.

    Key elements of the role include promoting health, supervising staff, managing complaints and patient safety incidents, and ensuring the implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) within the psychiatric nursing unit.

     Key Responsibilities

     Nursing & Patient Care

    • Delegate, supervise, and coordinate the provision of specialized psychiatric nursing care

    • Ensure patient care meets professional and legal standards

    • Lead patient safety initiatives and manage incidents

    • Implement health promotion and patient education programs

     Management & Administration

    • Support Nursing Services and act as Nursing Manager when delegated

    • Manage human, financial, and operational resources efficiently

    • Implement disciplinary and corrective measures for staff

    • Maintain evidence-based practice and professional growth

    • Develop and enforce SOPs and regulated norms and standards

     Training & Staff Development

    • Mentor and develop Operational Managers and nursing staff

    • Coordinate staff training programs and ensure quality service delivery

    • Promote ethical and professional standards among the nursing team

     Quality Assurance & Reporting

    • Compile evidence-based reports for patient care continuity

    • Conduct patient satisfaction surveys and manage complaints

    • Ensure compliance with nursing policies, DOH guidelines, and public service regulations

     Strategic Oversight

    • Monitor, evaluate, and improve nursing practices

    • Maintain alignment with Health Act, OHS Act, MHCA 2002, Labour Relations Act, and other relevant frameworks

    • Contribute to quality nursing service management and resource planning

     Minimum Requirements

     Qualifications & Registration

    • Diploma/Degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification allowing SANC registration

    • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse (Notice 425)

    • Post-basic nursing qualification in the relevant specialty (Advanced Psychiatric Nursing Science, ≥1 year, SANC-accredited)

    • Current SANC registration for 2026/2027

     Experience

    • Minimum 10 years appropriate/recognizable experience in nursing post-registration

    • At least 6 years post-basic qualification experience in psychiatric nursing

    • At least 3 years of management experience in nursing

     Knowledge & Skills

    • Knowledge of nursing care processes, legal frameworks, and public service regulations

    • Leadership, organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills

    • Interpersonal skills: conflict handling, counselling, public relations, negotiating

    • Financial and budgetary management

    • HR and administrative insights for nursing operations

    • Computer literacy and valid driver’s license

    • Knowledge of DOH policies, OSD for nurses, and Public Finance Management
