     Job Overview

    The Operational Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a psychiatric nursing unit, ensuring quality patient care, compliance with nursing standards, and effective use of resources.

    This role blends clinical expertise, management, and administrative oversight, supporting specialized psychiatric nursing services in a cost-effective and efficient manner.

     Job Description

    The Operational Manager will supervise staff, coordinate patient care, and manage unit resources. The role ensures compliance with legal and ethical standards, promotes quality nursing services, and participates in staff training and development.

    The Operational Manager also contributes to hospital quality assurance programs, supports research and education, and maintains a positive work environment for multidisciplinary teams.

     Key Responsibilities

     Nursing & Patient Care

    • Promote quality of nursing care according to professional scope of practice

    • Ensure delivery of comprehensive, holistic, and specialized nursing care

    • Maintain ethical, legal, and professional standards in patient care

     Management & Administration

    • Supervise daily operations of the nursing unit

    • Manage human, financial, and material resources efficiently

    • Ensure cost-effective and equitable service delivery

    • Implement and maintain compliance with legislation and nursing policies

     Training & Development

    • Coordinate staff training and mentorship

    • Participate in education of student nurses

    • Promote continuous professional growth and ethical standards

     Quality Assurance & Reporting

    • Participate in hospital quality assurance and quality improvement programs

    • Coordinate unit meetings and liaise with multidisciplinary teams

    • Maintain a positive and professional practice environment

     Minimum Requirements

     Qualifications & Registration

    • Diploma/Degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification allowing SANC registration

    • Registered with South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse

    • Post-basic qualification in Advanced Psychiatric Nursing (≥1 year)

    • Current SANC registration for 2026/2027

     Experience

    • Minimum 9 years appropriate/recognizable experience post-registration

    • At least 5 years post-basic qualification experience in Advanced Psychiatric Nursing

    • Diploma in Nursing Administration (advantageous)

    • Valid driver’s license

     Knowledge & Skills

    • Knowledge of:

      • Public Service Act and Regulations

      • Public Finance Management Act (PFMA)

      • OSD for Nurses

      • Mental Health Care Act, Nursing Act

    • Understanding of HR and financial policies and practices

    • Leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills

    • Ability to supervise multidisciplinary teams

    • Promote nursing professionalism and ethos
