    Job Description

    The Assistant Director: Extension will oversee the delivery of agricultural extension and advisory services to farmers and agricultural clients. The successful candidates will promote farmer-driven programmes, sustainable agricultural enterprises, good farming practices, and the effective implementation of agricultural projects and programmes.

    The role involves providing technical support, building the capacity of farmers, facilitating partnerships, monitoring agricultural projects, and promoting the use of modern agricultural technologies and practices.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Oversee the provision of agricultural extension and advisory services.
    • Promote farmer-driven extension programmes.
    • Implement a commodity-based approach to agricultural development.
    • Promote the efficient use of resources such as:
      • Soil
      • Water
      • Veld
    • Coordinate and participate in farming demonstrations.
    • Organise farmers’ days and information sessions.
    • Conduct farm visits and impact assessments.
    • Source technical input from agricultural specialists.
    • Promote sustainable agricultural enterprises.
    • Gather and analyse information to identify and prioritise problem areas.
    • Identify agricultural projects and conduct feasibility studies.
    • Establish structures such as cooperatives and committees.
    • Build the capacity of farmers and agricultural clients.
    • Promote good agricultural practices, new technologies, and current industry trends.
    • Monitor and evaluate production systems.
    • Provide continuous support to ensure sustainable production.
    • Facilitate project planning structures.
    • Provide technical support and assist with the development and implementation of business plans.
    • Facilitate the registration of legal entities, including cooperatives and close corporations.
    • Prioritise projects and present them to project approval structures.
    • Support and monitor the implementation of agricultural projects and programmes.
    • Conduct effective monitoring and evaluation of projects.
    • Facilitate partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
    • Promote and implement relevant agricultural strategies and programmes.
    • Build and maintain relationships with clients and stakeholders.
    • Engage with commodity organisations such as SASA, Grain SA, and other relevant organisations.
    • Participate in relevant committees and forums.
    • Provide input into policy development.
    • Keep up to date with national and international agricultural developments, policies, prescripts, and procedures.
    • Compile and submit required reports.
    • Ensure compliance with Public Service prescripts and departmental policies.
    • Promote customer satisfaction.
    • Provide input into the budget planning process.
    • Supervise human, financial, and physical resources.

    Requirements

    • Appropriate four-year Agricultural Degree at NQF Level 8.
    • Compulsory registration with SACNASP.
    • 3–5 years’ relevant experience.
    • Valid Code B driver’s licence.
