Job Description
This role focuses on providing professional psychological services to students, supporting their emotional, social, and academic wellbeing.
You will work within student support structures to:
- Help students manage personal and academic challenges
- Provide therapeutic interventions
- Support career development and decision-making
- Promote mental health through programmes and workshops
It’s a student-centered role combining counselling, assessment, and developmental support within a university environment.
Key Responsibilities
Counselling & Therapy
- Provide psychotherapy and counselling for:
- Emotional challenges
- Social issues
- Career development
Psychological Assessment
- Conduct psychometric assessments
- Diagnose psychological conditions
- Provide appropriate treatment or referrals
Student Support
- Perform psychological screenings
- Offer first-level interventions
- Support student wellbeing and functioning
Career Guidance
- Provide career counselling
- Assist students with academic and career decisions
Collaboration
- Liaise with:
- Faculties and academic departments
- Student affairs and support services
- Student representatives
Development & Outreach
- Design and present student workshops
- Promote counselling services (marketing & awareness)
Administration
- Manage office tasks and reporting
- Support departmental goals and initiatives
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree in Counselling/Clinical Psychology (NQF Level 9)
Active registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (proof required)
At least 1 year experience:
- Working with students in higher education OR
- Working with young adults
Recommended (Advantageous)
- 2+ years’ counselling experience in a university setting
- Experience in:
- Career counselling
- Trauma counselling
- Ability to speak Sesotho and/or Zulu
