    About the Role

    The General Worker will be responsible for providing effective equipment maintenance assistance, welding, electrical support, and reliability services. This role will ensure that all tasks are performed safely and efficiently, following established procedures and codes.

    Additionally, those assigned to the Directional Drilling Team will support operations by improving drilling sustainability and adhering to strict safety protocols.

    Key Responsibilities

    A General Worker at Sasol will be expected to perform the following tasks:

    Maintenance and Equipment Support

    • Assist with welding of mining equipment using flux core and other welding techniques.
    • Operate welding equipment safely and efficiently.
    • Cut materials and pre-heat using oxy-fuel gas cutting equipment while following safety regulations.
    • Assist in operating overhead cranes and lifting equipment according to safe work procedures.

    Safety and Compliance

    • Conduct visual inspections of the work environment to identify and report unsafe conditions.
    • Follow job-specific SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and COPs (Code of Practices) to maintain high housekeeping standards.
    • Participate in daily safety meetings and risk assessments to ensure adherence to safety measures.
    • Report any abnormal conditions or incidents to supervisors.

    Teamwork and Productivity

    • Function efficiently within a team to help achieve company goals.
    • Support artisans in their daily tasks.
    • Work towards cost-saving initiatives while maintaining productivity.
    • Meet work deadlines to support overall business objectives.

    Job Requirements

    Minimum Qualifications

    To qualify for the General Worker position, candidates must have:

    • Grade 12/N3/NCV Level 4 or Equivalent (Maths & Science will be an advantage).
    • A valid Driver’s License (Code 08 or higher).
    • The ability to obtain a Medical Certificate of Fitness.
    • A First Aid Certificate (advantageous but not mandatory).

    Work Experience, Knowledge & Skills

    Applicants must possess:

    • 12 months of welding experience.
    • Ability to safely operate an angle grinder.
    • Proficiency in using a cutting torch.
    • Basic knowledge of underground mining machinery, including:
      • Shuttle Car
      • Roof Bolter
      • Crushers
      • Feeder/Feeder Breaker
    • 12 months of plant experience (preferred but not required).
    • Ability to use MIG welding equipment (advantageous).

    Technical Skills Required

    • Strong understanding of safety procedures and regulations.
    • Knowledge of Mine Health & Safety Act (MHSA) and Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA).
    • Ability to interpret written work instructions and technical documents.
