Requirements
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A National Diploma or Degree in Environmental Health.
- Current registration with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Environmental Health Practitioner.
- Experience requirements:
- Grade 1: No experience required.
- Grade 2: Minimum 10 years of relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA.
- Grade 3: Minimum 10 years of relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA.
- Proof of previous service record.
Knowledge and Skills Required

- SABS Code for the Safe Disposal of Medical Waste in Healthcare Facilities
Key Responsibilities
As an Environmental Health Practitioner, you will be responsible for ensuring public health and environmental safety. Your duties will include:
1. Vector Disease Surveillance and Control
- Conduct epidemiological investigations on vector-borne diseases.
- Implement entomological surveillance programs to monitor and control disease-spreading insects.
- Participate in health awareness campaigns to educate the public on disease prevention.
2. Health Inspections and Environmental Monitoring
- Perform regular health inspections and surveillance to identify and assess nuisances and hazards.
- Ensure compliance with health legislation through proper monitoring and enforcement.
- Conduct community and facility surveys to assess environmental health risks.
3. Education and Awareness
- Collect data on environmental health issues to inform the department’s strategies.
- Disseminate information on health awareness days and community forums.
- Educate communities on proper sanitation, hygiene, and waste disposal practices.
4. Preventative Quality Systems
- Implement waste management strategies to prevent environmental contamination.
- Oversee product recall processes for contaminated goods.
- Ensure the effectiveness of rapid diagnostic tests for environmental health risks.
- Monitor the efficacy of drugs and chemicals used in public health interventions.
5. Water Quality and Food Control
- Participate in water quality monitoring programs to ensure access to safe drinking water.
- Enforce food control regulations to ensure the safety of food products.
- Conduct entomological investigations to identify disease vectors in food and water sources.
