The University of the Free State (UFS) is inviting applications for the position of Medical Scientist (Virology) at the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Unit within the School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences. This permanent position is based at the Bloemfontein Campus and is classified as post level 8 (Junior Management).
Job Overview
The Medical Scientist will be responsible for maintaining robust genomic sequencing workflows for enteric and respiratory viruses using Illumina platforms and Oxford Nanopore Technologies. The role involves data analysis, troubleshooting, continuous workflow improvements, and bioinformatics development. The successful candidate will also be expected to train and mentor students, collaborate with stakeholders, and present research findings at meetings.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain an efficient genomic sequencing workflow for enteric and respiratory viruses using Illumina and Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
- Perform whole genome and metagenomic sequencing data analysis and generate detailed reports.
- Troubleshoot and enhance Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) workflows for improved efficiency and accuracy.
- Conduct library generation and sequencing using Illumina MiSeq, NextSeq 2000, and Oxford Nanopore platforms.
- Develop bioinformatics workflows and identify relevant data analysis tools.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, contributing to drug discovery and new platform technologies.
- Train and mentor students and junior staff on NGS workflows and data analysis.
- Present findings in internal and external meetings and generate reports for stakeholders.
- Maintain meticulous experimental records using an Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN).
- Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and scientific best practices.
Inherent Job Requirements
To qualify for the position, candidates must meet the following minimum criteria:
- A PhD in Virology (NQF Level 10).
- At least three (3) years of academic experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).
- Proven research experience in whole genome and metagenomic sequencing of enteric and respiratory viruses.
- A minimum of two (2) years of hands-on experience in sequencing library preparation on automated liquid handlers (preferably Hamilton NGS Star and Perkin Elmer Zypher).
- Practical experience in sequencing data generation using Illumina MiSeq, NextSeq 2000, and Oxford Nanopore platforms.
- A strong research publication record in accredited national and international virology journals.
Recommended Qualifications and Experience
Although not required, the following qualifications and experience are highly recommended:
- A minimum of three (3) first-author publications and at least ten (10) co-authored publications.
- Expertise in molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, DNA/RNA purification, PCR, and RT-PCR.
- Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and sequencing data analysis.
- A proven track record of presentations at local and international conferences.
- Experience handling client genomic service requests and compiling data reports.
- Experience in the formal supervision of postgraduate students.
