Job Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is recruiting a Clinic Care Assistant (Phlebotomist) for its new store in Ficksburg, Free State. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing safe, accurate, and efficient blood collection procedures and basic health screenings within a private primary healthcare clinic.
Working closely with physicians and nursing staff, you will ensure high-quality specimen collection, maintain infection control standards, and deliver exceptional patient care while supporting the smooth operation of the clinic.
Key Responsibilities
As the Clinic Care Assistant (Phlebotomist), you will:
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection according to approved procedures.
- Label, handle, store, and prepare specimens accurately for laboratory testing.
- Maintain proper documentation and tracking of all collected specimens.
- Ensure patient comfort and safety throughout procedures.
- Conduct basic health screening procedures, including:
- Blood pressure measurements
- Blood glucose testing (finger-prick)
- Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments
- Total cholesterol testing
- Lipogram testing
- Haemoglobin (HB) testing
- Urine dipstick testing
- Pregnancy testing
- Vital signs monitoring
- Accurately record and report patient screening results.
- Verify patient identity and explain procedures before testing.
- Provide professional, compassionate support to patients, including children and anxious individuals.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly.
- Dispose of sharps and biohazard waste according to clinic policies.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workstation.
- Prepare phlebotomy equipment before procedures.
- Monitor stock levels and report shortages.
- Maintain and calibrate equipment where applicable.
- Accurately capture patient information in electronic or paper medical records.
- Support clinic operations and work collaboratively with healthcare professionals.
- Maintain housekeeping standards in accordance with Dis-Chem requirements.
- Comply with all Dis-Chem policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Health and Safety regulations.
- Adhere to the company’s uniform and personal appearance policy.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- A Certificate or Diploma in Phlebotomy or a related healthcare field.
- 2–5 years’ experience in a private clinic or primary healthcare setting.
- Experience using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or First Aid certification.
- Proven competency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.
- Willingness to work retail hours.
