Job Description
This role involves the supply, installation, upgrade, and commissioning of Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) equipment and software used in aviation operations.
The specialist will ensure that airport weather monitoring systems are modernised and fully compliant with ICAO aviation safety standards, improving the accuracy and reliability of meteorological data used for flight safety and airport operations.
The project also includes upgrading existing systems (Vaisala AviMet), integrating new sensors, and ensuring full operational readiness at both airports.
Key Responsibilities
The appointed service provider / specialist will be responsible for:
System Supply & Installation
- Supply AWOS sensors, servers, and related equipment
- Install and configure meteorological monitoring systems
- Replace outdated or obsolete sensors and components
System Upgrade & Integration
- Upgrade AWOS systems to meet latest ICAO amendments
- Ensure compatibility with Vaisala AviMet® System (v8.6.8.0 or later)
- Integrate new equipment with existing airport infrastructure
Testing & Commissioning
- Conduct full system testing and calibration
- Ensure accuracy of weather data collection and transmission
- Verify system performance and operational readiness
Decommissioning & Site Work
- Remove and dispose of obsolete equipment safely
- Assess existing cabling and reuse where applicable
- Ensure compliance with airport safety procedures
Training & Handover
- Provide training to airport technical staff
- Deliver manuals, documentation, and system guides
- Support smooth operational handover after installation
Compliance & Coordination
- Work under airport security and operational protocols
- Ensure compliance with ICAO Annex 3 standards
- Follow OEM (manufacturer) specifications and regulations
- Coordinate permits, access, and site safety procedures
Requirements (Minimum Qualifications & Experience)
Technical Experience
- Proven experience with AWOS or meteorological systems in airport environments
- Strong knowledge of Vaisala AviMet systems and upgrades
- Experience in sensor installation, calibration, and troubleshooting
Regulatory Knowledge
- Understanding of ICAO aviation standards (Annex 3)
- Familiarity with aviation safety and airport operational regulations
- Knowledge of OEM installation and maintenance guidelines
Technical Skills
- System integration and software configuration
- Electrical/ICT infrastructure knowledge (cabling, servers, networks)
- Ability to test and commission complex technical systems
Project Skills
- Project management and site coordination
- Ability to work across multiple airport locations
- Strong reporting and documentation skills
Training Capability
- Ability to train operational airport personnel
- Prepare user manuals and technical handover documentation
