Job Overview
The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is recruiting experienced legal professionals for the position of Senior Assistant State Attorney (LP5–LP6). The successful candidates will represent the State in a wide range of litigation matters, provide legal advice to government departments, and manage complex legal cases across various courts and tribunals.
This role offers an excellent opportunity for admitted attorneys with strong litigation experience to contribute to the administration of justice while supporting government departments through high-quality legal services.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Representing the State in litigation and appeals before:
- High Courts
- Magistrates’ Courts
- Labour Courts
- Land Courts
- Land Claims Court
- CCMA
- Tax Courts and Tax Tribunals
- Providing legal advice and formal legal opinions to government departments.
- Drafting, reviewing, and settling a wide range of legal agreements and documents.
- Handling liquidation and insolvency matters.
- Providing conveyancing and notarial services where applicable.
- Managing debt collection matters and trust registrations.
- Representing clients in arbitration proceedings, including interdepartmental arbitrations.
- Managing legal case flow and ensuring matters are handled efficiently.
- Supervising and providing effective people management where required.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- An NQF Level 7 qualification in Law (LLB) recognised by SAQA.
- A minimum of four (4) years’ appropriate post-qualification legal or litigation experience.
- Admission as an Attorney.
- A valid driver’s licence.
Knowledge Requirements
Candidates should possess knowledge of:
- Legal practice and litigation procedures.
- Office management.
- Accounting systems and trust accounts.
- Government legislation, policies, and prescripts.
- Constitutional law and the Constitution of South Africa.
- Conveyancing (advantageous).
