    Job Overview

    The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is seeking qualified and admitted Attorneys to fill 29 Assistant State Attorney (LP3–LP4) positions across South Africa. Successful candidates will represent the State in litigation matters, provide legal advice to government departments, draft legal agreements, and handle a variety of dispute resolution processes.

    This role is ideal for legal professionals with litigation experience who are looking to advance their careers in public service while contributing to the effective administration of justice.

    Key Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will be responsible for:

    • Representing the State in litigation and appeals before:
      • High Courts
      • Magistrates’ Courts
      • Labour Courts
      • Land Claims Court
      • Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA)
    • Drafting, reviewing, and settling various legal agreements on behalf of government clients.
    • Providing legal advice and written legal opinions.
    • Handling arbitration matters, including interdepartmental arbitration.
    • Managing debt collection matters.
    • Conducting legal research and preparing court documentation.
    • Managing litigation files and ensuring effective case flow management.
    • Supervising and supporting staff where required.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must have:

    • An NQF Level 7 qualification in Law (LLB) recognised by SAQA.
    • A recognised four-year legal qualification.
    • Admission as an Attorney.
    • A minimum of two (2) years’ appropriate post-qualification legal or litigation experience.
    • A valid driver’s licence.
