    Job Overview

    The University of the Free State is seeking a Senior Assistant Officer: Shelver/Circulations to support library collection maintenance, circulation services and frontline customer service. The successful candidate will assist with the organisation, accessibility and circulation of library materials while providing professional support to library users.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Shelve and organise library materials according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system.
    • Conduct shelf-reading, stocktaking and collection maintenance activities.
    • Identify damaged materials and assist with collection weeding and storage transfers.
    • Process library loans, returns, renewals, reservations and fines using a Library Management System.
    • Prepare new library materials by adding barcodes, RFID tags, labels and protective covers.
    • Assist users with locating library resources and using self-checkout machines and other library technologies.
    • Monitor library equipment and report maintenance issues.
    • Assist with digitising approved library materials and managing short-term loan collections.
    • Participate in library orientations, campaigns and outreach programmes.
    • Train new student assistants and library users on relevant procedures and technologies.
    • Compile shelving and collection statistics.
    • Provide professional and welcoming frontline customer service.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Grade 12 or National Vocational Certificate on NQF Level 4.
    • At least 1 year’s relevant work experience in a library or information services environment.

    Recommended Qualifications and Experience

    • Qualification in Library and Information Services.
    • Experience using a Library Management System such as Alma, Sierra, Koha or Symphony.
    • Experience with shelving and organising materials using the DDC system.
    • Basic numeracy, alphabetising and numerical sorting skills.
    • Relevant experience in a higher education environment.
    • Knowledge of university systems, policies and procedures.
    • Ability to read, write and understand English instructions.
