Tender Overview

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is seeking to appoint a suitable contractor to repair the leaking concrete roof of the cells at Harrismith Police Station.

The purpose of the project is to:

• Prevent water ingress

• Restore structural integrity

• Protect the safety and operational environment of the facility

• Ensure long-term waterproofing performance

Scope of Work

The successful contractor will be responsible for:

• Removal of damaged roofing and waterproofing materials

• Surface preparation (cleaning, fungus removal, dust removal)

• Priming of concrete surfaces

• Installation of waterproofing membranes

• Application of protective coatings

• Repair and alignment of gutters and downpipes

• Painting and sealing of treated areas

• Provision of scaffolding (approximately 6m height)

• Testing and quality assurance of completed works

• Compliance with safety and environmental standards

Technical Requirements

The contractor must:

• Use approved SABS-compliant waterproofing materials

• Apply APP modified bituminous membranes (4mm thick)

• Prime surfaces using bituminous-based primers

• Ensure proper lap joints and sealing

• Apply two coats of Silvercote bitumen paint

• Remove all debris, dust, fungus, and foreign particles before waterproofing

• Provide adequate scaffolding and safety measures

• Adhere to Department of Public Works standards and specifications

Skills & Experience Requirements

The bidder must demonstrate:

• 5–10 years’ experience in waterproofing and roofing repairs

• Proven track record of similar projects (with references)

• Qualified and certified personnel

• Knowledge of SABS standards and DPWI requirements

• Ability to meet project timelines and budget

• Compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations

• Capability to provide testing and quality assurance reports

• Ability to work within a secured police facility (security clearance may be required)
