Job Overview
The Medical Sub-Specialist in Internal Medicine (Nephrology) provides advanced care for patients with kidney disease, hypertension, and related disorders. The role includes clinical care, dialysis and transplantation oversight, academic teaching, research supervision, departmental administration, and collaboration with satellite dialysis units.
Key Responsibilities

Diagnose and manage patients with kidney disease and hypertension

Oversee kidney replacement therapies and kidney transplantation evaluation and post-transplant care

Perform minor procedures: kidney biopsies, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions

Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams as needed

Facilitate patient education and awareness programs

Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
-
Train and mentor junior staff in medical procedures
-
Supervise satellite dialysis units via visits and virtual consultations

Serve on departmental and hospital committees

Supervise research projects and participate in clinical trials
Minimum Requirements
-
Matric (Grade 12)
-
Qualification allowing registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Adult Nephrology

Current HPCSA registration for 2026/2027

Certified service record as a Medical Specialist

South African citizen or permanent resident
Experience Required
-
Grade 1: No post-registration experience required
-
Grade 2: Minimum 5 years post-registration experience
-
Grade 3: Minimum 10 years post-registration experience

Experience in teaching, research, and clinical sub-specialty care in Nephrology
Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of public service legislation, policies, and procedures

Clinical governance, patient safety, and evidence-based care

Strong teaching and mentoring skills for undergraduate, postgraduate, and subspecialty trainees
