    Job Purpose

    To provide strategic leadership, management, and oversight for all operational, administrative, and support functions within the assigned regional correctional services area. The Deputy Regional Commissioner ensures effective service delivery, compliance, governance, and alignment with the Department of Correctional Services’ (DCS) legislative and strategic mandates.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Qualification: An undergraduate qualification (NQF Level 7) in Public Administration, Behavioural Sciences, or an equivalent field, as recognised by SAQA.

    • Experience: At least five (5) years of experience at a senior managerial level.

    • SMS Pre-entry Certificate: A Certificate for Entry into the Senior Management Service (SMS) from the National School of Government (NSG) is compulsory and must be submitted prior to appointment.

    • Other Requirements:

      • Computer literacy.

      • A valid driver’s licence.

    Knowledge and Understanding

    • In-depth understanding of the South African Criminal Justice System.

    • Sound knowledge of Correctional Services operations and architecture.

    • Familiarity with the Public Service Act and Regulations, Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), and Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998 (as amended).

    • Comprehensive knowledge of public sector governance, policy formulation, and strategic management.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide strategic leadership and direction for all correctional centres and management areas within the region.

    • Manage and coordinate representation of offenders, ensuring fair, lawful, and consistent practices.

    • Oversee and direct the coordination of Information Technology (IT) services within the region.

    • Ensure effective communication services that promote transparency, awareness, and alignment with DCS objectives.

    • Oversee inspection services to ensure compliance with internal controls, standards, and operational policies.

    • Implement and monitor risk management systems to ensure full compliance with the DCS Risk Management Plan.

    • Manage and account for human resources, finance, assets, and performance information in accordance with legislative requirements.

    • Ensure adherence to governance, accountability, and service delivery standards.

    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, ethical leadership, and professional excellence within the regional structure.

    • Appointment will be made in terms of the Correctional Services Act.

    • The position requires a high level of integrity, strategic insight, and managerial competence.

    • The successful candidate must be able to lead multidisciplinary teams and ensure alignment with the Department’s strategic goals.
