Job Purpose
To provide technical Geographic Information Science (GISc) support through the collection, management, analysis, and dissemination of spatial data. The incumbent will ensure the effective use of GIS tools and systems to support environmental planning, decision-making, and reporting within the Department.
Minimum Requirements

Qualification: National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in GIS, Cartography, or a relevant qualification within a related field, as recognised by SAQA.

Experience: At least three (3) years of post-qualification technical GIS experience.

Registration: Compulsory registration with PLATO as a GISc Technician.

Driver’s Licence: A valid and unexpired driver’s licence.

Other: Willingness to work long hours with limited supervision.

Proficiency in database management, maintenance, and systems administration.

Skills in geo-database design, spatial data analysis, and map production.

Key Responsibilities
-
Perform technical GISc activities and provide spatial data support for departmental projects.

Source and compile spatial information from various data custodians.
-
Capture, clean, and manage spatial data from different formats and sources.

Apply coordinate systems, map projections, and georeferencing techniques.

Conduct spatial analysis and prepare maps, datasets, and reports to support GISc projects.

Maintain the effectiveness and functionality of the GIS Unit.

Manage GISc software, including updates, license renewals, and system troubleshooting.

Document organisational GISc challenges and facilitate user requirement workshops.
-
Conduct gap analyses on available spatial information and identify data needs.

Document and assess software capabilities, recommending enhancements.

Customise GISc software and tools to meet organisational requirements.

Supervise subordinates, define key performance areas, and monitor performance standards.

The role involves both technical and supervisory responsibilities.

Candidates must be able to work independently and manage multiple GIS-related tasks simultaneously.
