Main Purpose of the Position:
To manage and implement greening and forestry livelihood programmes in line with national priorities. The role promotes community empowerment, sustainable resource management, and enhances forestry-related socio-economic development through stakeholder engagement, project implementation, and strategic partnerships.
Minimum Requirements:
National Diploma (NQF 6) in Forestry, Developmental Studies, or related field
5 years’ relevant experience in forestry or a related environment
Of which 3 years must be at junior/entry managerial level (e.g. Assistant Director)
Valid driver’s license
Willingness to travel frequently
Knowledge & Competencies:
Comprehensive knowledge of:
National Forests Act, 1998 (Act No. 84 of 1998)
National Veld and Forest Fire Act, 1998 (Act No. 101 of 1998)
Understanding of:
Government structures and intergovernmental processes
Service delivery frameworks
Project and financial management
Stakeholder and community engagement
Strategic planning and policy integration
Skills Required:
Strategic capability and leadership
Project and programme management
Financial management and resource allocation
People management and team leadership
Excellent communication and negotiation skills
Ability to resolve conflict and handle pressure
Analytical, planning, and report-writing skills
Key Responsibilities:
Manage implementation of forestry livelihood and agroforestry projects
Promote greening programmes (e.g. Ten Million Trees Initiative)
Lead awareness campaigns like Arbor Month and Arbor City Awards
Build partnerships with government, NGOs, communities, and the private sector
Integrate forestry development into:
Provincial Growth and Development Strategies (PGDS)
Spatial Development Frameworks (SDF)
Integrated Development Plans (IDPs)
Ensure sustainable management of state nurseries
Oversee revenue collection and resource management
Provide technical advice and ensure compliance with forestry legislation
