    Job Overview:

    The University of the Free State seeks a Programme Director to lead the Language Practice programmes within the Department of Linguistics and Language Practice. This role combines academic leadership, programme development, quality management, and stakeholder engagement. The incumbent will manage curriculum design, operational planning, academic guidance, and marketing of the programmes while ensuring compliance with university governance frameworks.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Programme Development & Management

    • Design, redesign, and manage academic programmes in consultation with relevant stakeholders.

    • Develop new learning programmes aligned with industry needs and professional standards.

    • Lead operational planning, resource deployment, and budgeting to maximize programme delivery.

    • Motivate and lead academic staff to achieve excellence and transformation within programmes.

    Quality Management & Academic Leadership

    • Ensure high-quality, research-informed teaching and learning.

    • Maintain academic coherence and manage curriculation processes.

    • Provide academic guidance and advice regarding student registration, timetables, and curriculum amendments.

    • Conduct own research to contribute to the academic field.

    Marketing & Stakeholder Engagement

    • Develop and implement annual marketing plans and materials for programmes.

    • Represent programmes at roadshows, open days, and with professional authorities.

    • Liaise with industry and private sector partners to align curriculum with professional practice.

    Inherent Requirements:

    • PhD (NQF Level 10) in Linguistics, Language Practice, or closely related field, or registered for a PhD.

    • Permanent academic staff member of the Department of Linguistics or Language Practice.

    Recommended Experience:

    • Exposure to programme development and academic advisory services.

    • Leadership and management experience in an academic context.
