    Job Overview:

    Santam Commercial Underwriting is seeking a Junior Risk Surveyor to join the Survey Department, based in the North West / Bloemfontein region. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, analysing, and reporting on a wide range of insurance risks, both on-site and through desktop reviews.

    Working under the supervision of the Head Surveyor, the Junior Surveyor will contribute to Santam’s mission of being a trusted risk management partner by identifying exposures, advising on mitigation strategies, and supporting underwriters with detailed risk assessments.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Survey Delivery & Risk Assessment

    • Conduct site and desktop risk surveys within required turnaround times (SLAs).

    • Evaluate risks based on client information, existing surveys, photographs, and data provided by brokers.

    • Deliver accurate, technically sound assessments that enable underwriters to make informed decisions.

    • Identify, record, and communicate risk exposures, recommending actions for risk reduction, treatment, or transfer.

    • Provide feedback and risk advice to internal stakeholders (underwriters, relationship managers, operations teams) under the guidance of the Head Surveyor.

    • Ensure that all surveys align with Santam and national risk standards.

    Consultation & Advisory

    • Assist in educating and consulting with clients, brokers, and underwriters regarding risk exposure and mitigation.

    • Provide technical input during renewal processes and new business underwriting.

    • Support the development of risk prevention strategies in line with Santam’s operational and safety standards.

    Stakeholder Engagement

    • Engage with internal departments, brokers, and clients to ensure transparency and understanding of survey findings.

    • Collaborate with Santam Group divisions (e.g., MiWay, SEM, Namibia, Specialist Business) to support risk surveying needs.

    • Represent Santam professionally during client site visits and broker consultations.

    Compliance & Standards

    • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, bylaws, and safety regulations.

    • Follow client and site protocols (including inductions and health requirements).

    • Maintain accurate and comprehensive survey documentation and reports.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Education: Matric (Grade 12) – Essential

    • Experience: Minimum 1 year of risk surveying, safety, or related experience

    • Qualification (Preferred):

      • Fire Service Qualification

      • Technical or Engineering Degree/Diploma

      • FPA Advanced Courses or Risk Prevention Training (advantageous)

    • Driver’s License: Valid Code 8 (Essential)

    • Technical Skills:

      • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, MS 365)

      • Knowledge of underwriting processes, policy wording, and risk assessment procedures

      • Understanding of fire hazards, safety systems, and risk identification principles
