    Job Overview

    The General Worker for Sports Grounds is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance, and operational support of sports grounds and related facilities at the University of the Free State. The role involves cleaning, landscaping, minor maintenance tasks, and supporting daily operations to ensure safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing sports grounds.

    This position requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to operate gardening equipment and light machinery.

     Key Duties and Responsibilities

    • Clean designated areas and remove litter.

    • Take stock and request cleaning and gardening materials as needed.

    • Operate hand and power tools (brush cutter, mower, blower, etc.).

    • Perform irrigation and lawn maintenance.

    • Mark sporting areas as required.

    • Trim trees, mow, rake, and maintain athletic fields.

    • Assist in general maintenance tasks.

    • Operate motor vehicles or tractors for transporting materials and equipment.

    • Apply fertilizers and pesticides safely according to procedures.

    • Inspect and maintain equipment and supplies.

    • Follow safety procedures and promote safe work practices.

    • Attend team meetings and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

     Inherent Requirements

    • Minimum education: Grade 10 (NQF Level 2).

    • Valid EB/B driver’s license.

    • Relevant experience in similar duties (minimum 1 year preferred).

    • Knowledge of operating gardening equipment and machinery.
