Job Overview
The Pharmacist will be responsible for providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care by taking responsibility for patients’ medicine-related needs and ensuring these needs are met safely, professionally and in accordance with applicable legislation and professional standards.
The successful candidate will dispense medication, provide patients with advice on the correct use of medicines, monitor treatment compliance, manage prescriptions and support stock and administrative processes within the dispensary.
Minimum Requirements
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- BPharm or equivalent qualification.
- Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
- 2–3 years’ pharmaceutical experience.
- 2–3 years’ retail pharmacy experience, including student/intern experience as applicable.
- Computer literacy, particularly MS Office.
Advantageous Requirements
The following will be advantageous:
- Relevant retail or FMCG experience.
- Ability to speak a third additional language.
- SAP experience.
- E-scripting experience.
- Registered tutor status.
- Unisolv experience.
Key Responsibilities
Pharmaceutical Care
The Pharmacist will:
- Evaluate patients’ medicine-related needs by considering the indication, safety and effectiveness of therapy.
- Dispense medicines and scheduled substances on valid prescriptions.
- Check and sign off prescriptions prepared by assistants or interns and accept accountability for their correctness.
- Provide patients with information and advice regarding the appropriate use of medicines.
- Assess patient compliance with therapy and conduct follow-ups where required.
- Provide pharmacist-initiated therapy.
- Compound, manipulate, prepare or package medicines and scheduled substances, or supervise these activities.
- Supervise the purchasing, storage, packaging, supplying and sale of medicines and scheduled substances.
- Participate in activities relating to medicine registration and pharmaceutical research and development where applicable.
- Promote public health and contribute to the provision of quality healthcare services.
Prescription and Dispensing
Responsibilities include:
- Accurately interpreting prescriptions while operating within professional and legal requirements.
- Capturing prescription details correctly.
- Verifying patient information on the system.
- Accurately picking, packing, labelling and checking medication.
- Applying knowledge of common dosages and important drug interactions.
- Providing patients with clear instructions regarding the correct use of supplied medicines.
- Correcting prescription errors rejected by medical aids.
- Ensuring authorisation of chronic, HIV/AIDS and oncology medication.
- Processing all required documentation for accurate medical-aid claims.
Customer Service and Patient Support
The successful candidate will:
- Assist patients at the dispensary, self-medication counter and front shop.
- Explain medical-aid costs and dispensing requirements to patients.
- Follow up with patients regarding script tracking and appointments.
- Evaluate disease conditions and refer patients to appropriate in-store health facilities when necessary.
- Maintain accurate customer profiles.
- Take appropriate action based on messages recorded on customer profiles.
- Ensure customer promises and commitments are followed through.
- Provide professional and patient-focused service at all times.
Stock and Administration
The Pharmacist will assist the Dispensary Manager with:
- Ensuring administrative functions are completed correctly and on time.
- Reporting low or out-of-stock items and stock discrepancies.
- Facilitating bi-annual stock takes.
- Maintaining stock, cash and asset controls.
- Ensuring stock-control procedures are followed.
- Keeping all required registers up to date in accordance with legislation.
- Maintaining accurate customer and pharmacy records.
Compliance and Store Standards
The successful candidate must:
- Adhere to Dis-Chem policies, procedures and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Comply with applicable pharmaceutical legislation and SAPC requirements.
- Follow Health and Safety rules and regulations.
