Job Description
This is a dual academic–clinical role combining:
- Medical practice in Family Medicine / Primary Health Care
- Teaching and training of MBChB students
- Academic research and curriculum development
- Leadership and administrative responsibilities within the department
You will be both a clinician and a university lecturer, training future doctors while contributing to healthcare service delivery and academic excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
- Act as teaching and learning coordinator for Family Medicine
- Manage and coordinate assessments for MBChB students
- Develop and update teaching materials and assessments
- Monitor student performance and progression
- Provide student support and development
- Contribute to curriculum development
- Deliver clinical training for undergraduate medical students
- Support Community-Based Education (CBE) programmes
Research
- Conduct and support medical education and clinical research
- Publish journal articles and present at conferences
- Participate in departmental research focus areas
- Contribute to student research projects
Engaged Scholarship
- Apply medical expertise for public benefit
- Participate in community-based health projects
- Support knowledge sharing between university and external stakeholders
- Contribute to service learning initiatives
Leadership & Administration
- Coordinate undergraduate Family Medicine courses
- Serve on departmental and faculty committees
- Participate in academic governance structures
- Perform administrative duties assigned by the Head of Department
- Ensure compliance with university policies
Minimum Requirements
MBChB degree (NQF Level 8)
AND/OR
Specialist qualification in Family Medicine (NQF Level 9)
Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an independent medical practitioner
At least 5 years’ experience in:
- Primary Health Care OR
- Family Medicine
Proven experience in:
- Clinical training and supervision of students or junior doctors
- Medical or health-related research
Recommended (Advantageous)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) trainer certification
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) trainer certification
- Experience in higher education teaching
- Knowledge of online learning systems (e.g. Blackboard)
- Research publications and conference presentations
