JOB DESCRIPTION
This role focuses on teaching, research, and academic leadership in pastoral theology, with a strong emphasis on:
- Pastoral care and counselling
- Therapy within diverse and African contexts
- Interdisciplinary theological research
The position combines:
- Academic teaching
- Research output
- Student supervision
- Community and institutional engagement
It is a full academic role, not just classroom teaching.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching & Learning
- Present undergraduate and postgraduate modules
- Teach pastoral theology, care, and counselling/therapy
- Integrate African and multicultural perspectives
Research
- Conduct research in pastoral theology and related fields
- Publish in accredited academic journals
- Develop manuscripts for publication
Academic Engagement
- Present research at conferences
- Participate in scholarly and professional communities
👩🎓 Postgraduate Supervision
- Supervise Master’s and PhD students
Research Development
- Apply for and secure research funding
Administration & Leadership
- Participate in departmental and faculty administration
- Contribute to academic leadership activities
Community Engagement
- Engage in teaching, research, and community-based initiatives
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Requirements
Option 1:
- PhD (NQF Level 10) in:
- Practical Theology (Pastoral Care & Counselling), OR
- Theology / Religion / Psychology (relevant specialisation)
OR Option 2:
- Master’s Degree (NQF Level 9) in:
- Practical Theology OR Psychology
- With specialisation in pastoral care/counselling
Additional Mandatory Requirements
- Undergraduate background in theology
- Evidence of:
- Conference presentations (oral/poster)
- Research work or manuscripts for publication
- Strong academic record
RECOMMENDED (ADVANTAGEOUS)
- Registration with HPCSA (General Counsellor)
- Registration with:
- CPSC / ACRP (Religious Specialist Level 4+)
- Teaching experience in higher education
- Research publications in accredited journals
- Experience in:
- Counselling (individual/community)
- Faith-based or social impact work
- Digital teaching skills
- Participation in academic or pastoral organisations
