The University of the Free State (UFS) has announced an exciting opportunity for students passionate about languages and linguistics. Sponsored by the National Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC), 30 bursaries are available for the 2025 academic year.

These bursaries are aimed at senior students who are enrolled in language practice and language-related degree programs at UFS, providing them with a valuable financial lifeline to support their educational journey.

    Opportunities at the Bloemfontein Campus

The Bloemfontein Campus offers several language-related degree options eligible for these bursaries:

    1. Bachelor of Arts (Language Practice): Students pursuing this degree can apply for financial support to further their studies in professional language services.
    2. Bachelor of Arts with Majors in Linguistics, Sesotho, isiZulu, South African Sign Language, or Afrikaans: These programs are perfect for those wanting to specialize in South African languages.
    3. BA Honours in Language Practice, Linguistics, South African Sign Language, Afrikaans, or African Languages: This advanced qualification provides an in-depth understanding of linguistic theory and practice.
    4. Master of Arts (MA): Candidates specializing in Language Practice, Linguistics, South African Sign Language, Afrikaans, or African Languages can also benefit from this bursary scheme.

    Opportunities at the Qwaqwa Campus

Students studying at UFS’s Qwaqwa Campus also have access to this funding for specific programs:

    1. Bachelor of Arts: Majors must include at least one indigenous language, such as Sesotho or isiZulu.
    2. BA Honours in African Languages: This advanced qualification focuses on African linguistic and cultural studies.
    3. Master of Arts in African Languages: A highly specialized program aimed at postgraduate students looking to contribute to the development of African languages.

    Key Details for Applicants

The bursaries cover tuition fees only, ensuring that students can focus on their studies without the financial burden of academic costs. Applications open on 27 January 2025 and close on 21 February 2025. Interested students are encouraged to act promptly, as the bursary process is competitive, and only successful applicants will receive notification by 28 February 2025.

    How to Apply

Students wishing to apply should contact the respective campus representatives for guidance:

The application process requires applicants to adhere strictly to the eligibility criteria. Importantly, students must not hold multiple bursaries or funding from other sources, such as NSFAS or the National Research Foundation (NRF), concurrently. Any excess funding received must be refunded to NSFAS or the institution. This policy ensures fairness and equitable distribution of resources among students.

    Notifications and Conditions

Applicants must carefully review all conditions outlined in the bursary contract. Those who fail to comply with the requirements or who register for incorrect modules risk forfeiting their bursary. Additionally, the National Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, along with UFS, reserves the right to withdraw the bursary if any terms are violated.

With fields of study ranging from African languages to sign language and linguistics, the bursary program is an excellent opportunity for students to gain financial support while making a meaningful impact in their chosen disciplines.
