Job Description
The appointed contractor will be responsible for inspecting, testing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining standby generators and associated electrical changeover systems at Katleho Hospital.
The purpose of the contract is to ensure that the hospital’s backup power systems remain:
- Reliable.
- Safe.
- Fully operational during power interruptions.
- Compliant with electrical and safety requirements.
The contractor will perform a full assessment of the standby generators, identify faults, complete necessary repairs, and service the automatic/manual changeover panel system.
Main Responsibilities
1. Generator Inspection and Assessment
The contractor must:
- Conduct a complete inspection of standby generator units.
- Test generator operation and performance.
- Assess mechanical and electrical components.
- Identify faults, defects, and maintenance requirements.
- Prepare an assessment report detailing:
- Generator condition.
- Fault findings.
- Recommended repairs.
- Replacement requirements.
2. Generator Servicing
Responsibilities include:
- Perform routine generator servicing.
- Inspect and service engine components.
- Check:
- Oil levels and lubrication systems.
- Cooling systems.
- Fuel systems.
- Batteries and charging systems.
- Electrical connections.
- Control systems.
- Replace worn or defective components where required.
- Ensure generators operate according to manufacturer specifications.
3. Generator Repairs
The contractor must:
- Diagnose generator faults.
- Repair electrical and mechanical problems.
- Restore generator functionality.
- Replace damaged components where necessary.
- Test repaired equipment before returning it to service.
Possible repair areas include:
- Starter systems.
- Alternators.
- Control panels.
- Wiring and electrical connections.
- Battery systems.
- Fuel systems.
- Engine components.
4. Changeover Panel Servicing
The contractor must:
- Inspect the generator changeover panel.
- Test automatic/manual changeover operation.
- Check electrical connections and protection devices.
- Verify correct transfer between:
- Main electrical supply.
- Standby generator supply.
- Repair faults affecting changeover functionality.
- Ensure safe operation during power failures.
5. Testing and Commissioning
The contractor must:
- Conduct operational tests after servicing.
- Confirm generator load performance.
- Verify standby operation.
- Test safety controls.
- Provide commissioning results.
- Confirm equipment readiness for hospital use.
6. Reporting and Documentation
The contractor must provide:
- Inspection reports.
- Maintenance reports.
- Repair records.
- Test results.
- Recommendations for future maintenance.
- Documentation of replaced parts and completed work.
Technical Requirements
The successful contractor must have:
CIDB Registration
Mandatory:
- CIDB grading of 2EB or higher.
- Contractors with at least 1EB or higher may be eligible as stated in the tender notice.
Generator Maintenance Capability
Ability to:
- Inspect standby generators.
- Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults.
- Perform repairs.
- Conduct generator testing.
- Maintain hospital backup power systems.
Electrical Expertise

- Have suitable testing equipment and tools.
- Be able to respond to hospital maintenance requirements.
- Attend the compulsory clarification meeting.
