    Job Overview

    The Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) is seeking a qualified and experienced Registrar to join the Free State Division of the High Court in Bloemfontein. The successful candidate will provide administrative and judicial support to the judiciary, oversee case flow management, ensure compliance with court procedures, and contribute to the efficient administration of justice.

    This role is ideal for a legal professional with litigation or superior court experience who is passionate about supporting judicial processes and maintaining high standards of court administration.

    About the Office of the Chief Justice

    The Office of the Chief Justice is responsible for supporting the Chief Justice and the South African judiciary by providing administrative, operational, and institutional support to the country’s Superior Courts. The OCJ is committed to promoting an independent, accessible, and efficient justice system.

    Key Responsibilities

    As a Registrar, you will:

    • Coordinate case flow management and provide administrative support to judicial officers.
    • Ensure compliance with court rules, legislation, and relevant prescripts.
    • Handle the taxation of bills of costs.
    • Manage the issuing of court processes and the initiation of legal proceedings.
    • Coordinate appeals and review matters.
    • Attend to requests from judges relating to court cases and judicial processes.
    • Issue and sign court orders and official correspondence on behalf of the court.
    • Compile, analyse, and monitor monthly, quarterly, and annual court statistics.
    • Manage court files and records in accordance with legislation and records management policies.
    • Prepare files and documentation for audit purposes.
    • Arrange the submission of court records for translation where necessary.
    • Respond to public enquiries and official correspondence.
    • Perform office management, planning, and organisational duties.
    • Supervise staff and manage related human resource processes.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must possess:

    • An LLB degree or an equivalent four-year legal qualification.
    • A valid driver’s licence.
    • At least 2 years’ post-qualification legal experience.

    Experience Requirements by Salary Level

    MR3

    • LLB degree or equivalent qualification.
    • Minimum 2 years’ post-qualification legal experience.
    • Service certificates must accompany the application.

    MR4

    • LLB degree or equivalent qualification.
    • Minimum 8 years’ post-qualification legal experience.
    • Service certificates must accompany the application.

    MR5

    • LLB degree or equivalent qualification.
    • Minimum 14 years’ post-qualification legal experience.
    • Service certificates must accompany the application.

    Added Advantages

    Preference may be given to candidates with:

    • Superior Court experience.
    • Litigation experience.
    • Supervisory or staff management experience.

    • Sign a performance agreement upon appointment.

    Salary and Benefits

    The successful candidate will receive:

    • Salary: R337 563 – R1 155 777 per annum, depending on the applicable MR3–MR5 level and verified experience.
    • Appointment in accordance with the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD), Resolution 1 of 2008.
