    Project Purpose

    The purpose of this project is to replace and rehabilitate the existing internal building sewer system and external main sewer line at Bongani Hospital. The project aims to improve the reliability, safety, and functionality of the hospital’s sewer infrastructure while ensuring compliance with public health, environmental, and engineering standards.

    The works are intended to address ageing or defective sewer infrastructure, reduce failures and blockages, improve sanitation services, and ensure uninterrupted operation of the hospital environment.

    Scope of Work

    1. Site Establishment and Preparation

    • Establish the construction site in accordance with project requirements.
    • Provide necessary equipment, labour, materials, and temporary facilities.
    • Implement traffic, access, and safety controls around hospital operations.
    • Protect existing buildings, services, and hospital facilities.
    • Coordinate construction activities to minimise disruption to healthcare services.

    2. Internal Building Sewer System Rehabilitation

    The contractor will be responsible for the replacement and rehabilitation of internal sewer infrastructure, including:

    • Inspection and assessment of existing internal sewer systems.
    • Removal of damaged or defective sewer pipes and fittings.
    • Excavation and preparation of areas requiring replacement.
    • Installation of new sewer pipes, connections, and fittings.
    • Replacement of defective drainage components.
    • Repair and reinstatement of affected building areas.
    • Ensuring correct gradients, alignment, and connections.
    • Testing of completed internal sewer installations.

    3. External Main Sewer Line Replacement

    Works include:

    • Investigation and identification of existing external sewer routes.
    • Excavation and preparation of sewer trenches.
    • Removal of existing damaged sewer pipelines.
    • Supply and installation of new sewer pipelines.
    • Installation of manholes, chambers, valves, and associated structures where required.
    • Connection of new sewer lines to existing infrastructure.
    • Backfilling and compaction of excavated areas.
    • Rehabilitation of disturbed roads, pathways, and landscaped areas.

    4. Sewer Infrastructure Installation and Rehabilitation

    The contractor must undertake:

    • Supply and installation of approved sewer pipes and fittings.
    • Proper jointing and sealing of sewer pipelines.
    • Installation of durable and corrosion-resistant materials.
    • Repair or replacement of associated sewer infrastructure.
    • Ensuring systems are watertight and fit for purpose.

    5. Testing and Commissioning

    The contractor must:

    • Conduct sewer flow testing.
    • Perform leakage and integrity testing.
    • Verify correct operation of the rehabilitated sewer system.
    • Identify and correct defects before completion.
    • Commission the completed sewer infrastructure.
    • Provide completion documentation and test results.

    6. Quality Control

    The contractor must ensure:

    • Compliance with engineering specifications.
    • Use of approved construction materials.
    • Proper workmanship and installation methods.
    • Regular inspections and quality checks.
    • Correction of defects identified during inspections.

    7. Health and Safety Requirements

    The contractor must comply with:

    • Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements.
    • Construction Regulations.
    • Hospital safety protocols.
    • Infection prevention and control requirements.

    Safety measures must include:

    • Safe excavation practices.
    • Protection of hospital staff, patients, and visitors.
    • Appropriate signage and barriers.
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Safe handling of construction materials and equipment.

    8. Environmental Management

    The contractor must:

    • Prevent contamination of surrounding areas.
    • Manage waste generated during construction.
    • Control dust, noise, and environmental impacts.
    • Dispose of removed sewer materials responsibly.

    Minimum Contractor Requirements

    Eligible contractors must have:

    • CIDB Contractor Grading: 6CE or higher.
    • Demonstrated experience in:
      • Sewer rehabilitation projects.
      • Civil engineering infrastructure.
      • Pipeline installation and replacement.
      • Hospital or complex operational environments.
    • Qualified personnel experienced in civil and sewer works.
    • Capacity to manage:
      • Project timelines.
      • Quality requirements.
      • Health and safety compliance.
      • Coordination with stakeholders.

    Required Skills and Expertise

    The contractor should have experience in:

    • Civil engineering construction.
    • Sewer reticulation systems.
    • Underground pipe installation.
