Job Purpose:
To manage, maintain and inspect mechanical systems and equipment on campus. This includes overseeing mechanical preventive maintenance contracts, quality control on repairs and installations, ensuring health and safety compliance, and supporting daily operational and technical needs across the university’s estates.
Minimum Requirements:
N6 Engineering qualification (NQF Level 5) – attach a copy
Minimum 2 years’ relevant post-qualification experience as a technician
Valid driver’s license Code 8 or 10 – attach a copy
Recommendations (Advantageous):
Knowledge and experience in managing:
Air conditioning (domestic and industrial)
Emergency power generators
Steam systems
LP Gas, diesel burners, boilers, pressure vessels
Water softening systems
Heat pumps
Experience working in complex institutional environments like universities
Familiarity with Preventive Maintenance Contracts
Key Responsibilities:
Inspect mechanical equipment and ensure quality workmanship
Oversee daily tasks, preventive maintenance, and project operations
Sign off on job cards, invoices, and quotes
Evaluate and advertise quotations
Make operational decisions in the Section Head’s absence
Participate in after-hours services and travel to Qwaqwa campus monthly
Manage the Building Management System (BMS)
Supervise multiple service contracts including:
Atbro Systems
Mechanical Preventive Maintenance (e.g. generators, boilers, heat pumps)
Elevator maintenance
Swimming pool chemicals & dosing
Ensure Occupational Health and Safety certifications are in place (e.g., Annexure B, LPG compliance)
Identify mechanical faults and coordinate resolution plans
