    Job Description

    The Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Internship provides graduates with practical workplace experience in health, safety, environmental management, and regulatory compliance within the Department of Correctional Services.

    The successful candidate will assist with implementing occupational health and safety programmes, monitoring workplace compliance, conducting inspections, supporting risk management initiatives, and promoting a safe working environment across correctional facilities and offices.

    This internship offers valuable exposure to workplace safety management, environmental compliance, and public sector health and safety operations.

    Key Responsibilities

    Occupational Health and Safety Support

    • Assist in implementing Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.
    • Support workplace health and safety initiatives.
    • Promote a culture of safety awareness and compliance.
    • Assist in monitoring compliance with OHS legislation.

    Workplace Inspections and Audits

    • Participate in workplace safety inspections.
    • Identify potential hazards and unsafe conditions.
    • Assist in conducting safety audits and assessments.
    • Support corrective action and improvement initiatives.

    Risk Management

    • Assist with hazard identification and risk assessments.
    • Monitor workplace risks and safety concerns.
    • Support incident prevention programmes.
    • Contribute to risk mitigation strategies.

    Incident Reporting and Investigation

    • Assist with recording workplace incidents and accidents.
    • Support investigations into incidents and near misses.
    • Help compile reports and recommendations.
    • Maintain accurate safety records and documentation.

    Environmental Management

    • Assist with environmental compliance initiatives.
    • Support waste management and environmental awareness programmes.
    • Monitor environmental health and safety practices.
    • Participate in sustainability and environmental improvement projects.

    Administrative Support

    • Maintain health and safety records and databases.
    • Prepare reports and documentation.
    • Assist with filing, record keeping, and compliance documentation.
    • Support departmental projects and activities.

    Training and Awareness

    • Assist with safety awareness campaigns.
    • Support health and safety training initiatives.
    • Promote employee understanding of workplace safety requirements.
    • Participate in workshops and development programmes.

    Minimum Requirements

    Qualifications

    Applicants must possess a:

    • National Diploma or Degree in Safety Management

    OR

    • National Diploma or Degree in Environmental Management / Environment

    Required Skills

    • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety principles.
    • Understanding of workplace risk management.
    • Report writing and documentation skills.
