    Main Purpose of the Position

    To provide specialised Obstetrics and Gynaecology services, including the diagnosis, treatment, surgical management, and ongoing care of women’s reproductive health conditions. The incumbent will provide leadership within the clinical unit, supervise junior staff, contribute to clinical governance, support training and research, and ensure the delivery of high-quality maternal and women’s healthcare services within the hospital and across referral facilities in the Free State Province.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology Services

    • Diagnose and manage obstetric and gynaecological conditions.
    • Provide specialist consultation services to both inpatients and outpatients.
    • Manage antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care.
    • Treat high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies.
    • Diagnose and manage reproductive health disorders.
    • Perform specialist obstetric and gynaecological procedures and surgeries.
    • Participate in emergency obstetric interventions when required.

    2. Patient Care and Clinical Management

    • Provide comprehensive specialist medical care to patients.
    • Assess, diagnose, investigate, and develop treatment plans.
    • Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment appropriately.
    • Counsel patients and families regarding:
      • Prevention strategies
      • Treatment options
      • Surgical procedures
      • Potential complications
      • Recovery and rehabilitation
    • Promote patient-centred care and informed decision-making.

    3. Emergency and Critical Care Support

    • Participate in emergency obstetric and gynaecological services.
    • Apply advanced life support principles when managing critically ill patients.
    • Support intensive care and resuscitation interventions where necessary.
    • Assist in reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality through timely interventions.

    4. Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services

    • Prescribe medications and treatment plans.
    • Order and interpret diagnostic investigations, including:
      • Ultrasounds
      • Laboratory tests
      • Radiological examinations
      • Specialised investigations
    • Perform and assist with medical and surgical procedures.

    5. Teaching and Supervision

    • Supervise:
      • Medical Officers
      • Registrars
      • Interns
      • Community Service Doctors
      • Other junior healthcare personnel
    • Provide clinical teaching and mentorship.
    • Support continuous professional development activities.
    • Facilitate knowledge transfer and skills development.

    6. Leadership and Team Management

    • Participate in multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
    • Provide leadership within the Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit.
    • Assist with clinical decision-making and service planning.
    • Promote teamwork, accountability, and quality patient care.

    7. Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance

    • Participate in clinical governance programmes.
    • Conduct clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Monitor clinical effectiveness indicators.
    • Implement corrective actions where necessary.
    • Promote evidence-based clinical practice.

    8. Documentation and Medico-Legal Responsibilities

    • Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records.
    • Complete medico-legal reports and documentation.
    • Ensure compliance with professional and legal standards.
    • Minimise medico-legal risk through proper clinical practice and record keeping.

    9. Outreach and Support Services

    • Provide specialist outreach services to healthcare facilities within the Free State Province.
    • Support lower levels of care through consultation and mentoring.
    • Strengthen referral pathways and specialist support services.
    • Assist in improving maternal and reproductive healthcare services throughout the province.

    10. Research and Continuous Improvement

    • Participate in clinical research activities.
    • Analyse healthcare outcomes and service performance.
    • Contribute to innovation and service improvement projects.
    • Promote evidence-based healthcare delivery.

    11. Administrative Responsibilities

    • Participate in departmental meetings and planning sessions.
    • Assist with operational management of the clinical unit.
    • Compile reports and submit required documentation.
    • Perform reasonable duties assigned by:
      • Head of Department
      • Head of Clinical Unit
      • Senior Medical Specialists

    12. Commuted Overtime Duties

    • Perform compulsory commuted overtime in accordance with departmental policies.
    • Participate in after-hours, weekend, and emergency call rosters.
    • Ensure continuity of specialist services outside normal working hours.

    Minimum Requirements

    Educational Qualifications

    Applicants must possess:

    • Senior Certificate (Grade 12).
    • MBChB degree or equivalent medical qualification.
    • Appropriate specialist qualification that allows registration as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

    Professional Registration

    Applicants must have:

    • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
    • Current HPCSA annual registration for the 2026/2027 period.

    Experience Requirements

    Grade 1

    • No post-registration specialist experience required.

    Grade 2

    • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience after registration as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the HPCSA.

    Grade 3

    • Minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience after registration as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the HPCSA.
