Main Purpose of the Position
To provide comprehensive medical care to patients within the Internal Medicine and Clinical Haematology Unit, including diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and long-term management of patients with haematological disorders and related medical conditions. The successful candidate will support specialist services, supervise junior staff, participate in clinical training, and contribute to high-quality patient care within a tertiary academic hospital environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Patient Management
- Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with medical and haematological conditions.
- Provide inpatient and outpatient medical services.
- Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment where necessary.
- Ensure continuity of care and follow-up management.
2. Internal Medicine and Clinical Haematology Services
- Manage patients with blood-related disorders and general internal medicine conditions.
- Participate in specialist ward rounds and multidisciplinary discussions.
- Assist with diagnosis and treatment of:
- Anaemia disorders
- Blood cancers and malignancies
- Clotting disorders
- Bone marrow disorders
- Other haematological diseases
- Support oncology and specialised medical services where required.
3. Outpatient and Follow-Up Care
- Consult patients in outpatient clinics.
- Monitor chronic disease management.
- Ensure appropriate long-term follow-up and treatment adherence.
- Review investigations and adjust treatment plans accordingly.
4. Emergency and Critical Care Management
- Participate in the management of medical emergencies.
- Develop competence in:
- Resuscitation procedures
- Intensive care management
- Emergency medical interventions
- Assist in stabilising critically ill patients.
5. Patient and Family Education
- Inform and counsel patients and families regarding:
- Diagnosis
- Treatment options
- Procedures
- Risks and complications
- Rehabilitation and recovery
- Promote patient understanding and participation in healthcare decisions.
6. Supervision and Training
- Supervise junior medical staff and interns.
- Provide clinical guidance and support.
- Assist in developing the clinical competence of junior healthcare professionals.
- Participate in teaching and academic activities within the department.
7. Clinical Documentation
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate clinical records.
- Write detailed case notes and progress reports.
- Prepare referral letters and discharge summaries.
- Ensure compliance with medico-legal and hospital documentation standards.
8. Specialist Consultation and Collaboration
- Consult senior specialists when cases exceed personal expertise or scope of practice.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Communicate effectively with referring doctors regarding patient progress and treatment outcomes.
9. Academic Development and Research
- Study and remain updated in Internal Medicine and Clinical Haematology.
- Participate in departmental academic programmes.
- Attend educational meetings, case discussions, and clinical reviews.
- Support research and evidence-based clinical practice where applicable.
Minimum Requirements
Educational Qualifications
Applicants must possess:
- MBChB degree or equivalent medical qualification.
- Qualification that allows registration as a Medical Practitioner in South Africa.
Professional Registration
Applicants must have:
- Full registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
- Current HPCSA annual registration for 2026/2027.
Experience Requirements
Grade 1
South African Qualified Applicants
- No experience required after registration as a Medical Practitioner with HPCSA.
- Completion of Internship and Community Service is required.
Foreign Qualified Applicants
- Minimum of 1 year relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council.
Grade 2
South African Qualified Applicants
- Minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration.
Foreign Qualified Applicants
- Minimum of 6 years relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council.
Grade 3
South African Qualified Applicants
- Minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration.
Foreign Qualified Applicants
- Minimum of 11 years relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council.
Advantageous Qualifications and Training
