Job Overview
Bongani Regional Hospital in Welkom is inviting suitably qualified and registered medical specialists to apply for the position of Medical Specialist in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, available at Grade 1, Grade 2 or Grade 3.
The successful candidate will provide specialist clinical services, manage patients within the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, supervise junior medical staff, support clinical governance and contribute to quality healthcare delivery across the Free State health system.
Salary
The position offers the following all-inclusive annual packages:
- Grade 1: R1,341,855 – R1,422,810 per annum
- Grade 2: R1,531,032 – R1,623,609 per annum
- Grade 3: R1,773,222 – R2,212,680 per annum
The package consists of 70% basic salary and 30% flexible portion, which may be structured in accordance with the applicable rules.
Medical Aid: Optional, subject to the prescribed requirements.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Senior Certificate / Grade 12.
- Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Appropriate tertiary qualification in Health Sciences, including MBChB.
- Initial and current registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Current annual HPCSA registration for 2026/2027.
Experience Requirements
Grade 1
- No experience required after registration as a Medical Specialist.
Grade 2
- At least 5 years’ relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Grade 3
- At least 10 years’ relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Care and Clinical Duties
- Manage medical conditions to ensure that competent specialist services are provided to patients.
- Brief, inform and counsel patients and, where appropriate, their relatives regarding prevention, treatment, operative procedures, complications and rehabilitation.
- Develop and maintain proficiency in resuscitation and intensive-care treatment to improve outcomes for critically ill patients.
- Prescribe medication and order and interpret diagnostic tests.
- Assist with medical procedures and surgeries.
- Provide specialist care within the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Supervise junior medical staff to ensure adequate and appropriate patient care.
- Train junior staff in key medical interventions and procedures.
- Provide clinical leadership and support within the multidisciplinary team.
Medical Documentation
- Maintain high clinical and ethical standards to reduce medical litigation.
- Complete accurate medico-legal documentation.
- Maintain adequate and up-to-date medical records.
Compliance and Quality Assurance
- Participate in clinical governance activities.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legal and statutory requirements.
- Adhere to the requirements and standards of relevant bodies and institutions, including Free State Department of Health, OHSC, HPCSA, CMSA and UFS.
- Conduct clinical audits.
- Monitor and evaluate relevant clinical effectiveness indicators.
Administrative and Operational Duties
- Consult patients on an outpatient basis to support optimal chronic disease management and long-term follow-up.
- Provide outreach and support services to other levels of care within the Free State Province.
- Perform commuted duties 164, which are compulsory and non-negotiable, in accordance with the relevant policy.
- Perform other reasonable duties as directed by the Head of Department, Head of Clinical Unit or Medical Specialist.
Working Environment
The successful candidate will be required to participate in clinical, administrative, supervisory and outreach activities. The position includes compulsory commuted duties 164, as prescribed by the applicable policy.
