    Purpose of the Position

    The Lecturer will contribute to teaching, curriculum development, research, postgraduate supervision, and academic administration within the Department of English. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing scholarship and student success in Applied Linguistics, English Language Studies, and Language Teaching.

    Key Responsibilities

    Teaching and Learning

    • Design and develop English Language modules.
    • Contribute to curriculum review and enhancement.
    • Coordinate first-year English modules and oversee course facilitators.
    • Present lectures and facilitate learning for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
    • Develop learning materials and assessments aligned with academic standards.
    • Monitor student performance and provide academic support where necessary.

    Research and Scholarly Activity

    • Conduct independent and collaborative research in:
      • Applied Linguistics
      • English Language Studies
      • Language Teaching
    • Present research findings at conferences, seminars, and academic forums.
    • Publish research outputs in accredited academic journals.
    • Participate in research projects that enhance the department’s scholarly profile.

    Postgraduate Supervision

    • Supervise honours, master’s, and eventually doctoral students.
    • Guide students through proposal development, research implementation, and dissertation completion.
    • Support postgraduate students in developing academic writing and research skills.

    Academic Administration

    • Participate in departmental, faculty, and university committees.
    • Assist with quality assurance and programme accreditation processes.
    • Maintain academic records and submit required reports.
    • Perform general administrative duties associated with teaching and research activities.

    Minimum Requirements

    Permanent Appointment

    • PhD (NQF Level 10) in:
      • Applied Linguistics, or
      • English Language Studies, or
      • Language Teaching

    Contract Appointment (5 Years)

    • Master’s Degree (NQF Level 9) in:
      • Applied Linguistics, or
      • English Language Studies, or
      • Language Teaching
    • Must obtain a PhD within five years to qualify for conversion to a permanent appointment.

    Additional Requirements

    • Evidence of conference presentations (oral or poster).
    • Evidence of research manuscripts suitable for publication.
    • Strong academic record.

    Preferred Qualifications and Experience

    • Completed PhD or proof of PhD registration.
    • Three years of teaching experience in higher education.
    • Established research and publication record.
    • Experience in curriculum development and module coordination.
    • Experience supervising postgraduate students.
