Job Description
The Office of the Chief Justice is seeking two highly organized and detail-oriented individuals to serve as Judge’s Secretaries at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein. This role requires exceptional administrative, organizational, and communication skills to support judges in their daily functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide general secretarial and administrative support to the judge.
- Type (or format) draft memoranda, decisions, opinions, or judgment entries assigned by the judge.
- Manage and type correspondence, judgments, and orders (including Dictaphone typing).
- Arrange and diarize appointments, meetings, and official visits.
- Coordinate travel and accommodation arrangements.
- Store, safeguard, and update case files, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal procedures.
- Perform digital recordings of court proceedings, particularly urgent after-hours cases.
- Accompany the judge to court and assist in managing the judge’s vehicle, including the logbook and driving duties when required.
- Prepare reports, financial disclosure statements, and case management documentation.
- Arrange refreshments for the judge and visitors, ensuring professional hospitality.
- Manage the judge’s library, update legal documentation, and conduct legal research as needed.
- Ensure strict confidentiality, accuracy, and professionalism in all assigned tasks.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum Qualification: Grade 12 Certificate.
- At least one year of secretarial experience (preferably in a legal/court environment).
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- An LLB degree or a minimum of 20 completed modules towards an LLB, BA Law, or BCom Law degree will be an added advantage (results must accompany the application).
- Proficiency in English (written and verbal).
- Strong computer literacy skills (MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent typing skills – shortlisted candidates will be required to pass a typing test.
- Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong research capabilities, confidentiality, and time management skills.

Application Guidelines

- Applications must be originally signed and dated by the applicant and accompanied by a detailed CV outlining qualifications, competencies, and experience.
- Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and other related documents before the interview (documents must not be older than six months).
- Candidates applying for multiple posts must submit separate Z83 applications for each position.
