Job Overview
The successful candidate will contribute to the development and promotion of African languages, terminology development and multilingualism initiatives at the University of the Free State.
The Researcher will lead and coordinate activities related to the UFS Terminology Development Project, conduct relevant research, support language policy implementation and collaborate with faculties, departments and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
The Researcher will be responsible for:
- Leading and coordinating activities related to the UFS Terminology Development Project.
- Conducting research in African language development, terminology development and multilingualism initiatives.
- Coordinating language policy implementation initiatives within the Academy for Multilingualism.
- Collaborating with UFS faculties and departments on terminology development projects.
- Working with external stakeholders involved in terminology development and African language initiatives.
- Producing research manuscripts with potential for submission to accredited journals.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- A PhD on NQF Level 10 in languages, linguistics, terminology development, lexicography or a related language studies field for a permanent appointment.
OR
- A Master of Arts degree on NQF Level 9 in languages, linguistics, terminology development, lexicography or a related language studies field.
- Candidates appointed with a Master’s degree will receive a five-year contract, during which they must obtain a PhD on NQF Level 10 to qualify for conversion to a permanent position.
- At least two years’ relevant experience in a terminology development project.
- Experience working in a higher education institution, government department or government entity specialising in African language development activities.
- Evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication in accredited journals.
Recommended Qualifications and Experience
The following will be advantageous:
- At least three years’ relevant experience in a higher education or government institution specialising in African language promotion.
- An Honours degree on NQF Level 8 in African Languages studies or a related field.
- Knowledge of Sesotho, terminology development and lexicography.
